Collection: The Bamboo Metropolis

Bamboo is everywhere in Hong Kong. It climbs skyscrapers, shelters opera singers, becomes lion heads and lanterns, steams dim sum, frames rituals, carries memory and disappears almost as quickly as it appears.

The Bamboo Metropolis, the third volume of the Zolima Culture Guide, explores bamboo’s living culture in Hong Kong through craft, architecture, food, festivals and art. It is about scaffolders and chefs, theatres and skyscrapers, artists and artisans — and the material that has helped shape the city itself.

For generations, bamboo’s strength, lightness and adaptability have made it distinctly Hong Kong. Yet its place is under pressure: scaffolding faces scrutiny, crafts are losing apprentices, and handmade traditions depend on fragile networks of knowledge.

At the same time, bamboo is being rediscovered by architects, artists, designers and younger Hongkongers. This book looks closely at bamboo before it becomes nostalgia, and asks how its traditions and possibilities can continue to grow.
